Sycamore Tree Pollarding: Reshaping and Reducing
For this project, Neil and the Beechwood Tree Care team were asked to rely on an ancient art form to reduce overground sycamore trees and enhance safety in our client’s garden.
Flynn, Harry and Fred were tasked with an overgrown cluster of sycamore trees which had created a cluttered and unruly environment for our client. Sycamore tree pollarding was requested for this project, as the client did not want the trees completely removed, but rather reduced and supported so they could grow healthy again in the future.
Project Overview: Sycamore Tree Pollarding
Our client had requested that we reduce and control the cluttered, overground sycamore trees in their garden through the ancient art of pollarding. Pollarding is a way of reducing trees down to the trunk or ‘knuckles’ so they are easier to manage, as well as encouraging healthy regrowth in the future.
While these sycamore trees were causing issues for our client as they were incredibly unruly, they did not want them completely removed from their landscape. The sycamore trees were a significant element in their environment and needed some additional support to ensure they would continue to thrive, which is why we performed sycamore tree pollarding and reduction for this.
What We Did: Sycamore Reduction
To reduce the sycamore trees, Fred, one of our skilled tree surgeons, began to pollard the trees. He removed the leaves and overgrown branches of the sycamore trees, before eventually cutting all branches right down to the trunk – leaving only the knuckles.
The branches were taken to our truck and chipper, where they would be turned into wood chips for easy disposal and to be reused as mulch.
During this sycamore tree pollarding, the branches were removed precisely using sharp tools, offering a clean cut as close to the trunk as possible. This process was repeated until all of the leaf-bearing branches were removed and a dramatic appearance was left as you can see in the video.
This reduction allowed light to flow into multiple gardens in the neighbourhood, as well as bringing in more natural light to our client’s home.
Conclusion
Through the ancient art of pollarding, our team created a safe, accessible and neat environment for our client by effectively reducing the clustered sycamore trees. This project was challenging due to the density of the trees, but our team made it a success and delivered results that our client was completely satisfied with.
This method of pruning and shaping created a tree that looked heavily pruned, but our clients were satisfied with the results. They could see the beauty of pollarded trees and understood the benefits it would provide for their overall landscape.
Before closing the project, the team informed our client of the upkeep and maintenance required for pollarded trees, such as repeat pruning to aid the tree’s health.
